Contour site plan

A contour site plan is a surveying deliverable that presents the terrain’s topographic conditions and planimetric features using contour lines and other cartographic elements. It plays a key role in preparing construction designs and land‑development projects, as it provides an accurate representation of slopes, elevation differences and surrounding site characteristics, helping to visualise varying height levels across the area.

How a contour site plan is created

To create a contour site plan, a geodetic survey is required, which may be carried out using traditional surveying instruments, GPS‑based technology, or even 3D laser scanning and drone surveying to produce a 3D point cloud. The resulting digital terrain model allows contour lines to be generated, typically displayed at 0.2–1 metre intervals on the plan.
